Pirate King by Laurie R. King

I’m sorry for the long hiatus but life kind of caught up to me and kept me busy. As I work in a bookstore and my birthday is coming up, this book came out and I couldn’t resist snagging a copy with my discount. It’s the eleventh book in the series following Sherlock Holmes and his young partner/wife Mary Russell.

This adventure finds Mary on her way to assist a film crew that seems to meet with disaster on every set chasing ‘realistic’ settings. This time they’re heading for the open seas to film a movie about a film crew filming Pirates of Penzance who really get captured by pirates. Confused yet? The assistant to the director’s assistant has gone missing so Mary fills in to find out what kind of shady deals this crew is involved with.

Things get rather confusing when fiction comes way too close to reality but not much more can be said without giving anything away. The situation is further complicated however by Mary and company realizing that maybe pirates do still exist.

I highly recommend this entire series beginning with The Beekeeper’s Apprentice. Any Sherlock Holmes fan will not be disappointed.
